Each of the five research areas below illuminates a different facet of the same underlying question: what physical processes connect tectonic activity, electromagnetic phenomena, ancient human memory, and anomalous observation — and why do they concentrate in these two mountain systems?

Geomythology

Overview

Geomythology is the study of geological events — volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides — that have been preserved in the oral traditions and mythological narratives of human cultures. Where conventional geology reads the rock record, geomythology reads the story record. The two archives, when cross-referenced, reveal a surprisingly coherent picture of catastrophic events that shaped both the landscape and the civilizations that arose within it.

Massif Central

The Auvergne region of the Massif Central sits atop one of Europe's most recently active volcanic fields. Gallic and pre-Roman traditions contain recurring motifs of fire emerging from the earth, of sacred mountains that speak, of places where the boundary between the living world and the underworld grows thin. The Puy de Dôme and surrounding chain of extinct volcanoes — the Chaîne des Puys — are candidates for the geological events behind these narratives. Medieval chronicles from the region describe luminous phenomena and ground tremors that predate modern seismographic records by centuries.

Appalachian Range

Indigenous oral traditions of the Appalachian region — particularly those of the Cherokee, Shawnee, and Lenape peoples — contain detailed accounts of landscape transformation events: rivers that changed course, valleys that filled with water, mountains that shook. These accounts, when mapped against the geological record of the Blue Ridge and Valley and Ridge provinces, show a striking correspondence with known tectonic and hydrological events. The New Madrid Seismic Zone, though centered further west, has influenced the oral record of the entire eastern mountain system.
